Fuzz Bellies and our Epoxy Bunnies are complimentary flies imitating the same baitfish; silversides and anchovies. We love to fish the Epoxy Bunnies but there are times when a softer more impressionistic fly seems to be the ticket.
For years simple bucktail streamers have fed all kinds of fish. Early Northeast striper flies were often not much more than a bucktail wing with a simple body. Fuzz Bellies start in this tradition. We add a bit of ostrich herl tail to extend the body and carefully dub a spiky body forming the shape of anchovies and silversides.
There are several different species of anchovies and silversides available to stripers along the Atlantic coast some are very small others a bit larger, there’s also juveniles at certain times. The Fuzz Belly comes in two sizes. Both are on #2 hooks the larger one is on a typical hook, the smaller one is on a short shank hook. We also use a different eyes too, the bigger Fuzz Belly has an epoxy eye, the smaller one simply a painted eye, this also changes the profile a bit.
