Any permit angler knows permit will use any excuse to refuse a fly. Permit guides will obsess about their flies altering a fine fly by coloring it, trimming the shape, adding gobs of sun cured epoxy maybe even say some special words just to convince a permit that the thing is actually food. The Flat Crab gives permit fewer reasons to refuse and guides maybe a little less reason to obsess.
The exclusive button weight blends in with the color and form of a crab while giving the fly plenty of weight to sink quickly. This weighting system along with an epoxied carapace stiffens the body so the fly keeps a flat profile but still fishes like our soft bodied Permit Crab or S.S. Merkin. With this extra heavy weight, the Flat Crab is the perfect pattern for the classic close permit shot that drops the crab in front of the fish but is also forgiving enough so an angler can strip and drop the fly to mimic a fleeing crab.
