We immediately fell in love with the long fine almost silky fiber, gray at the base shading to cream at the ends. After messing around a bit we introduced the Badger Tarpon Fly. The fly sold well and we were burning through the patches of fur we had in stock. One day Tim was restocking and opened yet another package of badger fur but it wasn't at all the same. This patch was creamy tan, moderately coarse with a nice crinkle and wonderfully translucent; great stuff but obviously not badger fur. We immediately envisioned some great flies but we had no idea what this single patch of fur was. The oddball patch got set aside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEventually Badger Tarpon flies started selling so well we order a whole badger hide with the tail on. That was it! That odd package of fur was from the base of the tail. We order a bunch of tails and started playing. The Bad Tail Squimp is the first fly we developed using badger tail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe have an affinity for natural fur. Many good flies incorporate synthetics where a natural fiber would be a better choice. We've tied a number of Squimp patterns for custom orders, some simple others more complex. Invariable the wing has been made of craft fur. With badger tail for the wing and tail the Bad Tail Squimp is the fly all the others have been trying to be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe smaller #6 Bad Tail Squimp tied on the Gamakatsu SS15 hook weighted with a small brass eye, perfect for bonefish. The stuff is an amazing subtle translucent hair up to six inches long. We use it for the tails on the Willy the Pimp and Goat's Breath Variation. But the long hair isn't what is used for the luxurious yarn, it's the sparse, fine under fur. When we use the long hair we pull the short stuff out and throw it away! It's soft, subtle and translucent the nearly perfect dubbing for trout flies but it was obvious that one day this underfur would find its way into a bonefish fly. Hence the Goat Belly Shrimp.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShrimp have a hard carapace on top with the gills sticking down from the belly. The gills are always moving. The combination of stiff translucent badger tail on top and cashmere dubbing below convincingly imitate various mantis and grass shrimp. Bonefish anywhere eat the Goat Belly, indeed any fish in skinny water will key on this fly. Don't limit it to bones. I wasn't sure quite how baked until a few weeks after Key West Tim plunked down the Quivering Fringe. All fuzz flattened on top, buggy in the back - elegantly baked!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Quivering Fringe may have been originally conceived on a permit endeavor but bonefish will feel left out if they don't get a chance to snack on it. Tied on a Gamakatsu SC15 #1 moderately weighted it is perfect for bonefish and permit throughout the Keys, Bahamas and the Yucatan Peninsula. The body is larger than a quarter, when stripped in slims down possibly looking more like a shrimp than crab. These bones are big, they roam relatively small flats that drop off into the Pacific depths and they eat a lot of Mantis shrimp. The Mantis shrimp in Hawaii aren't normal either. They dominate the Hawiaiian flats more than other flats largely taking the place of crabs and shrimp in the typical bonefish diet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCoach Duff's Spam and Eggs has been part of Hawaiian bonefish diet for a while. It looks like a pretty simple fly but when it gets down to it there are some important details. The body on both colors are dubbed with a specific mix of fur and flash. Normally rubber legs come off the back of a fly, not with this one! Coach decided they needed to come off the top of the head in some funky way. Often captains seem a bit crazy but they can come up with flies that feed fish. The Spam and Eggs has been breakfast lunch and dinner for Hawaiian bonefish for a long time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBoth colors of these flies were specifically developed for Hawaiian Bonefish but Mantis shrimp are important forage on flats throughout the tropics and subtropics. Bonefish, permit and jacks will eat this fly. The tan is the safe choice in most places but in Central America dark brown is often a good color.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpam and Eggs comes in two sizes #6 and #4 and with weed guards. Flies ties the Avalon to the original standards with rabbit hide wing and twisted marabou for the body.  We've had many customers tell stories about testing different Avalon flies with Cuban guides ours always wins the highest accolades if only because the original is a great design and we pay close attention to the details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur Avalon fly comes in the original #2 Gamakatsu sl12s and a light weight keelless #4 for bones in skinny water.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"S.S. We'd scratch our heads, let it rest and try something else. Eventually we added dubbing underneath the wing and worked in some micro legs to compliment the typical silicone legs. With the addition some sweet badger fur as a tail we now have a fly we love!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe S.S. Bitters is a pattern for bonefish everywhere. The notoriously difficult Islamorada bonefish will eat it. It'll perform well in the Yucatan where the original Pop's Bonefish Bitters was introduced. And Bahama's bonefish? They'll crush the S.S.Bitters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe S.S. Bitters comes with a weed guard and in two sizes, #6 and #4. It's a little heavier than a fly weighted with bead chain eyes but because of the body and wing material it sinks no faster than a typical bonefish fly. We have three colors tan, olive and brown. Tan and olive are obvious but when customers first saw this pattern they really wanted a brown version. Brown is an essential color in Hawaii and important on other bonefish flats but we developed the color scheme more with redfish in mind. Carp will eat this thing too.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"S.S.
