Night Time Poon, tan
Night Time Poon, white
Years ago I sat down with Capt. Bryan Yates for dinner in Key West. We were tweaking a few of his patterns and looking through some of the things I had. He picked up this fly: “Wow, not that’s an old time pattern”. Apparently when he started guiding this was a pattern a number of captains threw at tarpon, apparently at dark. Either it just fell out of favor or the tyer dropped out of sight and nobody knows of it anymore.
It’s time to bring the Night Time Poon Fly back. A couple years after dinner with Captain Yates I was standing on a bit of sand late at night with Capt. Will Benson. Baby tarpon were busting the narrow channel in front of us. I think he suggested putting on this fly. It was cool fishing, a lot like a caddis hatch at night for big browns; locating by ear, guessing distance and drift and casting by feel. I’d locate a fish, cast across the channel and strip the Poon fly, short, quick strips and KABOOM. Certainly some of the most memorable tarpon fishing I’ve done. Will missed out, he had another mission and had to go down the beach for a bit, his last words were “ Don’t catch them all”. The Night Time Poon Fly made me very happy that night, he wasn’t so happy when he got back.
