Capt. Ron Wagner of Islamorada first introduced us to the Scates Shrimp. The samples he sent us were red and white, not typical colors fished to the Islamorada bonefish! As it turns out those two colors were usually thrown at redfish, the tan will work on bonefish but this is primarily a redfish fly.

Of course Capt. Wagner didn't invent the Scates Shrimp. This fly was developed by Capt Chuck Scates for fishing redfish and specks on the Texas coast. The fly is designed for very skinny water it lands softly and strips well. It is effective when the immature penaied shrimp are in the shallows or when fish are feeding on grass shrimp.

We tie this fly on the Gamakatsu sc15 and put a single post weed guard on it. We also put a bit of epoxy on the rear portion of the krystal flash back to ensure
