The Best Captains and Awesome Outfitters

Capt. Will Benson Capt. Bob Beigley

Those who pay attention to such things know Captain Will Benson has produced some super fishing films; Drake Magazines film contest winner in 2007 and 2008, film debuts in Key West 2008 and 2009. His film "Connected" is part of the '09 Fly Fishing Film tour. So how does he get all this great footage ... by guiding 300 days a year! Nobody works harder on the flats, no captain understands the waters around Key West better and lets hope there is no more intense fisherman on a poling platform.
(Note: The above picture is of Will slumming in the midst a Northeast blue fish blitz. It was August, he's dressed like it was October.)

Captain Bob has been fishing his whole life and is a very well rounded fisherman. His father was an avid fly fisherman who showed him the ropes at a very young age fishing on the Chesapeake Bay. Bob later moved to Ocean City, Maryland where he became a successful offshore mate earning his master captain's license fishing primarily for marlin, tuna and shark. While working in the Florida Keys on an offshore fishing boat, he discovered flats fishing and knew this was right up his alley. After years of study, he decided the time was right and started up Double Haul Charters. He is a full-time guide.
Capt. Bob will guide you on your search for bonefish, tarpon, permit, barracuda and shark and make you feel as comfortable as if you were fishing with an old fishin' buddy. Bob has devoted his whole life to fishing and feels a great amount of pride each time you hook a fish and will use all of his experience to put you on fish. For a great time on the water, come join Capt. Bob at one of the finest fishing destinations in the world, the Florida Keys.

Capt. Bob Dekeulenaere Capt. Scott Howard

From Guam to New England and south to Florida Capt. Bob Dekeulenaere has been guiding anglers for over 20 years. For more than ten of those years he has fished the waters around Boca Grande. All the captains in that area pursue the monster tarpon that show up but Capt. Dekeulenaere also leads anglers deep into the mangroves for snook and off shore for BIG cuda, Kingfish and Amberjack. He's passionate about customizing trips to each individuals dreams and abilities.

We've tied for Capt. Scott Howard longer than any other captain and come to expect hearing low key reports of huge fish he's boating. Capt. Howard has fished the Kennebec River and the waters just south of Portland, Maine for years and seems to always know where the monster line-sides are. Of course he won't tell you this, it all seems normal to him; just another day with a few thirty inch plus fish to the boat. Lately Scott has developed a passion (obsession?) for the blue fin tuna that show up on the Maine coast. When the tourist leave the beaches and the days shorten a bit in September put yourself in the boat with Scott Howard; you may catch a bunch of the big stripers working their way south or find yourself out on Jeffrey's ledge with gannets diving and big tuna slashing through bait balls.

Capt. Brett Greco Capt. Eric Wallace

There is a subset of Keys itinerant captains who fish the Rockies or the Northeast through the summer into the fall and South Florida in the late winter and spring. Capt. Brett Greco represents the best of them. When most of the other captains were not doing much early in 2009 he sent S.S.Flies a report of landing several large bonefish and basically keeping his anglers busy all day. Sounds like he does the same when fishing his home waters in Montana where he pursues wild brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout. With Grecco on the Fly adverturesome anglers can fish the flats of Biscayne Bay and deep into the Everglades early in the year then travel north and west to fish the Yellowstone, Madison and Missouri in summer without changes guides.

To many fishing the waters around Portland Maine, Capt. Eric Wallace must appear a bit out of place. In this fishery of Maritime Skiffs and Parkers, heavy shooting heads and weighted flies, Eric stalks the shallows from the polling platform of an Action Craft flats skiff. There are at least two reasons for this. Capt. Wallace spends the winters in the Keys hunting fish in legendary places like Loggerhead Basin and the Back Country; he is quite accustom to flats fishing. More importantly there are 12,000 acres of Maine mud flats around the Royal River holding large stripers, stripers acting a lot like the flats fish of the south. Skinny water, laid up fish, crab patterns characterizes this northern haunt; Eric has it all wired. Anybody interested in flats fishing, anyone who likes stripers on the fly has to stand on the bow of Eric's boat ready to take a shot at a 30-inch striper. Capt. Wallace is on Scott Rods Pro staff and features Bauer reels; bring your own gear or use his.

If you like to travel, love the flats as much as a western river, maybe like to ski a bit too you have to find a way to fish with Capt. Jeremy Fisher. Capt. Fisher spends three months in Islamorada catching the monster Downtown bonefish and jumping tarpon. The rest of the year he is at home in Park City, Utah. The restless angler can stalk the flats in the spring, float the Green River in the summer and when on a ski vacation, sneak into the valley for an afternoon of winter nymphing all with the same talented guide. That's a pretty attractive option.

Capt. Mike O'Brien Capt. Bill Stockton

Capt. Mike has been a photographer and artist for 20 years. His wave and fish images have shown in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Japan. He came down with the saltwater fly fishing bug and hasn't been able to shake it; Mike has been fishing hard in Key West since 1997. Capt. O'Brien has a reputation for keeping his anglers out late, some even have to ask him to finally stop. In addition to stalking tarpon, permit, and bonefish on the flats, Capt. Mike likes to put anglers on the killer Key West nighttime tarpon bite; this definitely keeps anglers up past their bedtime.
